I think I'm in love!

My mom bought some goslings about a week or so ago and I love these little things! We have been keeping them in the house in a large box since they are still young. We sometimes let them out and they like being let out and will follow me around the house! We also let them in the bathtub and they were swimming about having a blast! I am really enjoying them.

We are still trying to figure out what to name them.

But now I am wondering, since it looks like other people have geese around here, what is your experience with them? Do they stay friendly if you raise them well? Are they good watchdogs? My mom forgot to ask the feed store where we bought them from what type they are, so we will probably have to call and ask. What type do you think they might be?

We have 17 of these little guys. They are great little guys. I believe they look like African Geese. They will always be friendly with humans if they have imprinted on you. They are the best watchdogs ever and people are afraid of them because they can bite. But they squak a whole lot and hiss before they bite. We love our geese very much and our flock keeps on growing. You will want to think about a rather large nest for them in the future and a wading pool. Since it is summer they are easy to find now. If you wait until the end of summer they are hard to find.... It's happened to me. Enjoy these little guys!

I've kept geese once, not sure I would again, but maybe...

Some were lovely pets, some were nothing much, some were nasty things. They were terrible bullies to all the other animals, deafeningly noisy, and at night if not restrained they would go for flights and smash into things and bleed to death. We got them to be livestock and found they were too attached to each other to cope with the regular vanishings of some flock members.

Geese need to eat grass, of they can 'go light' and die, it doesn't matter how much grain or pellets you give them. They need to be out in the grass grazing. Someone may know of something to feed them that does instead of grass but that's all I know so far, I don't know much about them. Not ideal livestock, fine for pets or just yard ornamentation if you've got a place big enough... But too much trouble for me offhand. I'd need a proper setup before I'd bother again.

They are adorable! I just got two from a feed store around us and I love them and they follow me everywere. they look like my two baby Toulouse geese. But they could be African. the only other Geese I have had were Sebastopols and sadly they died.

Why did your sebastopols die? Did you put them up in a predator proof pen?

they were in my house. one had a seizure and died. the other got lonely without it even though it was with my ducks and was dead the next day. very sad.

Healthy goslings just do not drop dead. Sounds like these sebbie babies did not get a proper diet to keep them healthy. I feed from birth waterfowl grower feed for 3 weeks and then start them over to adult feed at 3 weeks. Plus they should be outside eating as much grass and dandelion leaves as they can.

they did get grass and they were healthy up until that day. I do not know what was wrong with them.
