I have one hen (2.5 years old) and I just got 2 new ones from a farm that are about 4 months old. They have been very shy since I brought them home. 2 days after I brought them home, I noticed my original hen was kind of sneezing and breathing loudly. She was acting normally other than that and is still laying like normal so I checked her the next day and her breathing went back to normal. However, I noticed one of my new birds (see photo), has a runny nose on one side and bubbles in both eyes. Now today, my original hen is very sleepy and seems to be coughing every once in a while.

I live in Los Angeles, which does not seem to have many vets for chickens. The only one I could find that didn’t have a few week waiting period was a vet that would charge $200 each bird as an emergency fee. These symptoms seem pretty in line with what I have been reading about MG. Can someone please let me know exactly what I should be doing? I’m a total novice at the chicken world but these ladies are our pets so I don’t want to see them die if there’s anything I can do. I’m willing to spend the vet fee if I have to but I have a feeling there’s something I can do myself to treat this. I’m wondering about administration, dosage, exact product, what to do in case of future breakouts, etc.

I’m so mad at myself that I didn’t quarantine the new birds before bringing them home… My hens in the past have all been very healthy since i bought them as day old chicks so I didn’t realize how common sicknesses are. My heart is hurting right now that I just brought sickness into my backyard and it doesn’t sound like it’ll ever be fully curable…

It's a tough lesson learned for you and you acknowledged your mistake. It does sound like MG. You'll have to maintain a closed flock. No new birds in, no birds out to be sold or given away. Do not sell or give away eggs to be hatched. MG can pass through eggs. Antibiotics will treat MG but not cure it. Your birds will be carriers for life and stress will bring out symptoms.
Tylan 50 or Denagard will treat MG.

Thank you so much for responding. I have some questions:
1. Should I get Tylan 50 or Denagard? Not sure the difference.
2. What dosage should I give and do I just put it in their water? How do I make sure they all get the proper amount?
3. How long will it take for the symptoms to go away?
4. Is it usually deadly?
5. Do I treat all the chickens when one of them has a breakout? Should I quarantine the one who is sick?

It would be better to use Tylan 200 injectable instead of the Tylan 50 injectable. The Tylan 200 would require a lesser amount of the liquid to be given. Also, it seems that the Tylan 200 is more commonly seen in Tractor Supply stores than the Tylan 50. Either can be given orally using a syringe without a needle.
Tylan treats MG as well as certain other bacterial infections in poultry whereas Denagard treats only Mycoplasma diseases in poultry. Dosage for Tylan 200 is 0.05ml per pound of weight given orally 3 times a day for 5 days.
Treat sick birds only.
Medications mixed in water isnt a very reliable way of treating sick birds. Sick birds rarely drink, if they do, it's usually not enough to be effective. Also, birds drink less in cool or cold temps.
Hopefully you'll see improvement in about 3 days depending on the MG strain, continue dosing to include day 5.
Here's where you can purchase Tylan 200 if TSC or local feed stores dont carry it.

You're suggesting this person never buy or sell chickens on his or her property again?

Oh gosh. I’m not sure how much they weigh. I suppose I could stand on a scale with and without them and subtract the difference.

My main question here is how to get the liquid in their mouth. They are very flighty birds and won’t even come near me. I don’t see how I would be able to capture them 3x a day for 5 days. Even then, how to get the stuff in their mouth. Is there some kind of trick that you experts do??
