I thought my cover was blown....

Yes, they make no differentiation between 500 pound cows and 5 pound chickens. Of course I would have to get my neighbors' permission.........

See, that gives you lots of room to stand on for getting the law changed.

But you might want to board out the current flock and coop while you do it

I am so glad that I read this post! I had thought about relocating to NC but, not anymore, I can't give up my chickens for my neighbors : ) !

It's not a state law. There are plenty of places in NC that do not require you to get your neighbor's permission and have 1/2 acre per bird. You just have to check the laws in the town/township and county that you are considering moving into.

The 1/2 acre rule applying to all livestock and chickens being considered livestock by law doesn't surprise me. Otherwise, my guess would the the 1/2 acre per chicken rule was thought up by someone who really didn't want chickens in their community but didn't want to outright ban them...so instead they just make unreasonable.

Actually North Carolina does have a law that about selling chicks as pets too. I don't know the G.S. right now but I know Tractor Supply posts the signs quoting the statute that they cannot sell chicks in quantities less than 6. Yes, we're a** backwards in many regards. And I did look up the statute at the time. Thankfully the breeder I bought my chicks from broke the law......

i REALLY wouldn't like having to go to all my neighbors asking "May i please have a chicken?" - especially considering some of the neighbors i have.

. . . and, i was just thinking, are there any laws regarding how many barking dogs your neighbors can have?
