I went out today to give some treats to my free ranging girls and only 3 of the four came to see what I had in my goody bag.
Usually once the treats come out, everyone shows up to see what all the happy clucking is about.
I called for Penny as she usually comes running if I call her. No Penny! I looked in her favorite bug hunting spots. No Penny!
I was just about to start looking around the neighborhood when I saw her lying on her side in the dirt. I've never seen her lay on her side before.
As I came closer, she moved her feet a bit, but not her body at all. I felt a bit of panic in my gut. Did a dog or hawk get her? Was she sick?
I stood over her and cautiously began to look for injuries. Hmmmm no blood, but still just a few foot twitches. I started to pick her up and then......
In a flurry of flapping, he jumps out of my hands and tears across the yard to where the treats are. Once there she shakes about 5 gallons of dirt out of her feathers and begins stealing treats from the others.
Apparently I interrupted her spa time. She must have taken a serious dirt bath and was just taking in the sun when I so rudely decided to check her over.
I swear these girls are just really out there when they get in a trance. I hope she doesn't scare me like that again anytime soon.
What will tomorrow bring?
Liz
