I toss their food and they go nuts!

So the birds have a gravity feeder and eat from there. However when I come outside and sit with them, I’ll occasionally grab a handful of their feed and toss it on the ground.
The entire flock goes crazy and is scrambling for it like they’re all starved.
Is this normal lol?
All birds are 17-20 weeks

Very normal ... It's not in the feeder so they're thinking it's something different plus they love scratching and "foraging".
