We have been considering quail for a while. Idk when we r going to get some but i want to start with eggs. I want to get a lovely variety of quail tht is pleasing to the eyes and fun to have around. R they harder to hatch then chickens? Ive only ever sucessfully hatched one chick so i need advice..

Thanks in advance, Luv

Pheasants are not easy to hatch compared to quail (or chickens) and the eggs are much, much more expensive. They do not produce as many eggs -- red goldens like the picture only lay for about 3 months of the year. And realistically, they are too expensive of a bird to use for meat. Quails are much, much simpler for housing, too. Quail will be much more friendly/docile than pheasants.
Just my opinion (but I do have quail, chickens, and red golden pheasants)...

Check Craigslist or your local feed store. Someone is bound to have some. The coturnix eggs take about 17-21 days to hatch, button quail only need 16. Also, if you have chickens make sure your quail don't come into contact with them. Chickens are carriers of many many diseases and quails are not as risistent to them. Many people have had to cull entire quail coveys due to chickens transmitting diseases.

Luv, I have A&M whites, brown and golden, where are you on the east coast?

Honestly I wouldn't recommend whites, as they are harder to sex and they are a bit crazier than the others, after skinning you cant tell a white from a golden.

But to each his own.
