I want some dark eggers...

You never know what you will get from the hatchery, its a game of chance. Not only of the egg color could be wrong but sometimes the birds do not look like the "ideal" picture in the website. You can always shoot some pics from a poultry show and post the birds on your website and say that is the example of the birds you will get when you are a middleman for several hatcheries such as Meyers, Ideal, MM and Privett, etc.

I agree on the Whitmore Farms on their Welsummers and you would be hard pressed to buy a Maran pullet for a decent price. Do not be surprise to pay more than what you usually get in your area. The hatcheries do not guarantee the show quality or the egg color quality but some of the serious breeders would guarantee their stock potentinal of dark eggs.

Do not get Barnvelders, they are still needing work on the egg shell color and feather lacing problems. Check back about five years, there should be some decent Barnvelders that produces good consisent lacings and egg colors.

just curious....what's wrong with MPC? i ask, cuz i have 6 EE, 1 welsummer and 1 BO being shipped to me from MPC in a couple weeks.

There's nothing wrong with MPC if you just want chickens to lay eggs, but if you want a Welsummer who will truly give you a good egg, I'd rather go for a breeder who pays attention to what they breed - They actually know their Welsummers, focus on them, and look for the best egg. MPC, who gets their stock through Meyer, just looks for quantity - They just want a chicken to lay enough eggs to sell enough chicks. Nothing more. So chances are, your Welsummer from them won't have all that pretty of an egg compared to the typical brown.

My two cuckoo Marans are sweet girls - but they do broody. One just hatched out six chicks!

On the down side, though, neither has been laying eggs for months. First it was winter, then they were broody, now they are molting!

I don't have any, but I've heard that Wellie's hardly ever go broody.
