hi i wanted to now a few things about quails and breed suggestions, i want a breed which is good at laying but also goes broody. can they live with chickens or ducks and what are reqiurments fr them

No, they can't live with chickens or ducks. Their size depends on the species. Japanese quail are good layers but they rarely go broody. Broodiness has been bred out of most quails. If you want quails that are more likely to go broody, source out parent raised quails.

ok what breed do you recommend for egg laying and is medium size

Coturnix quail are the most common type of quail that people raise. Even jumbos don't get very big. Another advantage of coturnix quail is that in most states they don't require permits. Other types of quail often do. You may want to check with your dept. of agriculture.

We don’t need permits where I live but the species which are available are courtnix quails and button quail which one is better for coloration and which one is more tame and not scared of humans

I would say Coturnix. Button quail are pretty, but not as tame as Coturnix. You can get some very pretty colours of Coturnix as well. Here are some of mine.

Coturnix, which are pictured there, won't go broody. It doesn't take many generations of incubator hatched chicks to breed parenting out of them sadly.

Coturnix cocks need at least 3 hens and you can only keep one cock bird per cage/pen unless they are in a large aviary. The more space you can give them the better, but everything likes to eat them so they need a very secure pen or cage.

Button quail eggs are tiny, too tiny to be worth eating, and Buttons need more room than Coturnix and are generally best kept as pairs which makes housing them more complex. They are very active, always on the go. Again, a lot are incubator hatched these days and so unfortunately many aren't good parents. I've even had parent raised ones that were hopeless or killed their offspring.

You could look at Bobwhites but they need a large cage and again must be kept as a pair because they become very territorial during the breeding season. They are more highly strung than the easy-going Coturnix who has been bred for production and docility (though that doesn't make integrating different groups any easier). Quail are much more difficult to integrate and some individuals just don't get along. They can be very territorial and can seriously harm or even kill birds they do not like if forced to live in the same cage, or if they are introduced too quickly.

Game birds like quail are less domesticated than chickens so they don't have the same level of immunity to diseases that chickens do. Coryza is especially nasty for quail and chickens can be carriers without showing symptoms.
