I was offered a tortoise. Can he coexist with chickens?

Need more pics of the tort in question. If it's the one in the center, it appears to be a gopher tortoise but I need full front and top pics. You need to verify with the vet the type, sex, and age. Then research proper care and feeding. (tortoiseforum.org is a great resource) Different torts have different requirements (food, temp tolerance range, humidity needs, whether they hibernate or not, etc...) and you need to match your care to the species.

As to chickens, it really depends on your flock. I have 3 large sulcata tortoises and never once have the girls shown any aggression (or really any interest) towards them. They get along fine. Torts like to tip over water stations though. And really anything in their way.

Here is another pic. I don't know exactly if this is the tortoise he wants to give me but they are all the same species. They just reproduced a lot so he is giving away a few members of the family.

The vet told me there would be no problem with the chickens but he doesn't know my flock other than my sweetest hen. But she is chronically ill so she wouldn't try to fight any animal - I'm not sure about the other beasts.

Heh, what I need to really see is the nuchal scute, which is right on the front of the carapace (and is hidding my this guy's head in this photo) :) Still thinking gopher and really, unless your tort gets in the coop and is being a jerk, your girls likely won't give it a second thought. It isn't food, it's not a predator, and if it's not messing in their house, they aren't going to care.
