The editors of poultry magazines. Yesterday I stopped into the TSC to pick up some stuff and specifically to see if the new Practical Poultry mag. was in. I don't want to miss an issue and subscribing is out of the question since it is a UK publication. $7.50 a copy.
Well my point is this.

I noticed the FFUSA poultry magazine ( $5 ) and had a look. I could not believe what the publisher was trying to pass off as a decent Poultry publication. First there were more ads than articles. Second, do the writers know how to spell? I could not believe the errors. Third, the one article I read was cut off. What should have continued on the next page was not there but instead was, you guessed it, another advertisement. There was absolutely no educational value to this magaizne. Well, ok, not entirely true. The article was about Newcastle disease I think, or was it Foulpox? The thing is this information is free from the USDA. Though it really is the presentation that holds the readers interest. Truth is I was really disappointed to turn the page and find an advertisement instead of the rest of the article. I checked and rechecked and it just wasn't there. Why anyone would pay to have their product advertised in this publication is beyond me. I think there were only two articles in the whole thing. It mentioned vaccination. I've never vaccinated anything and where would I buy the vaccine. They could have done an article on vaccination, the how to's and where to's.

Next up is the Backyard Poultry magazine. To which I subscribe, by the way, and have been advocating on this forum for some time. This is the best poultry magazine on this side of the Atlantic. $4.99 on the stand it's really is worth subscribing to. If however you can't afford the $7.50 for Practical Poultry. I judge a magazines worthiness by how many articles I read or don't read and whether it has any bearing on my poultry endeavors. What I'd really like to see is an article on the poultry goings on, on a state by state basis. What do the hatcheries have to say about the comments on this forum? Or don't they care? How do they address the problems we buyers have? Seems to me they could find an endless supply of material right here. I'd also like to see them benchmark Practical Poultry in their advertising style.

Lastly Practical Poultry magazine from the UK. This is in my opinion the best of the three poulty magazines. I find I read more articles in this than the others. It has breed specific articles and while I don't expect to get any or all of them they are interesting. Who knew Ancona's came with rosecombs? I like the aricles about poultry management and diseases. If you want to learn about diseases this is the magazine to read. What's more there are advertisiments on treatments. Not a bunch of unnecessary vanities. What good is that cute little toy for your chickens if you don't know how to keep them healthy in the first place? There are articles on treatments and global concerns. Not just in the US. I really liked the article (2parter) on how hybrids compare to purebreds. I referred to this publication in answering posters questions often.

So that's it. Maybe you can't afford to subscribe to BYP or PP but perhaps you can share the cost with a friend. However if you can only afford one, get the Practical Poultry. Your chickens will thank you for it.

Now to find that spray for picking. ( a problem I'm having)
Have a nice day, all the best

What the article refers to is "Anti-Pecking" spray. Quote: Barrier anti-pecking spray is a totally natural , non -toxic, foul tasting treatment designed to help deter feather pecking in poultry (sometimes the first step towards cannibalism).

I expect there are time when we all may have a problem with this. In the spring specifically when we are hatching and moving stock around. Decideing who to keep and who to replace. At least this is where I'm at. Once my numbers get down to reasonable size it won't be a problem anymore.

Thanks for your help. Believe it or not we no longer have Agway's here. As far as I know. I will check TSC or Country Max.

Have you tried Hot Pick for the picking problem? I've never used it, but I've been told it works good. I've seen it in some poultry supply catalogs like eggcartons.com
