Egg pipped around 5pm yesterday, I just zipped from the pip - membrane is white.....what next??? Egg is wrapped in wet washcloth in bator, chirping a little but looks to be gasping some & trying to poke out!

Sounds like normal pipping and hatching behaviour. It might rest for quite a while before making any more progress. Mine usually pip then do nothing for between 8 and 14 hours. Don't worry that it's gasping or that it can't breathe properly, and don't rush it out of the shell. Why did you assist in the zipping? Had it been pipped for over 24 hours?

I've read that if the membrane is white they will have trouble. It was pipped for, probably, 18 hours. Once I could really feel the membrane it was incrediably tough. I've read this can happen with shipped eggs, which this was. I could see that the chick wasn't making progress and was not willing to watch it die (as I did last month with a pipped egg). I pulled on the membrane after softening it -still quite thick- and the chick made it out shortly after, seems fine. I'm glad I helped, big chick!

I've read that big chicks can have trouble hatching cause they don't have any room in the shell to get themselves manoeuvred into the correct hatching position. Maybe there was a bit of that going on here too? Congrats on the healthy chickie, btw!
