Ice Cold Watermelon For The Chickens

Don't expect them to take to it instantly. Chickens are afraid of new things.

Is that why they call them chicken??

I've been using watermelon as a treat for years. It's nutritious and it gets a lot of water into the chooks during hot weather. Whenever DBF and I eat watermelon, we save the rinds (always a little pink left on them) and feed them to the flock. They peck it almost down to the outside skin.

Cantaloupe, papaya, and any other soft fruit with a skin is also a welcome treat in the barnyard. If we have overripe (but not rotten) fruit, it gets cut up and given to the chooks.

My neighbor is the local watermelon guy. He sells watermelon in the summer time and whatever he doesn't sell for the day, he delivers them to me (free of charge). They are waiting for me along the fence when I drive up from work. Sometimes he will throw some in the chicken pens for me if I'm at work. He has done this for years. Some of the watermelon have slight bruises on them but otherwise, in perfect condition. They are not at all rotted or molded. I have about 75+ chickens and they love them. My barbado sheep can clean a watermelon rind better and quicker than a human. I love to see the animals enjoy their watermelon.

It is my chickens very favorite treat. I put it in the freezer for about half an hour on the really hot days. It is funny to watch the little silkies race in and race away so all the big chickens don't take it from them.

My girls love watermelon also. Good idea to put it in the freezer.
I will try that even though it has not been hot here in the Northeast. As far as treats, I find with my girls, the first time I give them something new it takes awhile for them to figure out if they want it or not. After they now it is ok, watch out.......
