I need to get out this afternoon to go for chemo. We have had the birds in our back room on and off since right after Christmas when temperature dropped to way below zero. Our coop has no electricity and we couldn't keep water for them from freezing. The door to the house faces north. So it never gets sun. My dumb question is this. We can only open the back door enough to let our dog out. If I put table salt out to try and melt the ice so I can get out will it hurt the Ducks and turkeys ? I imagine we will track it in our feet coming in and out number one. Number two when things thaw out they hang out under the porch and I don't want to do anything that would or could harm them

If a bird eats a big chunk of rock salt, that would be bad. I am wondering if could use fine, salt shaker type salt. Fine salt would be harder for a bird to eat and dissolve more quickly. Just a thought.

They will eat the melted snow and ice..An ice scraper and sand is all I use..
