Well, our newest peeps arrived today.

We ordered 6 buff brahmas and 5 golden laced wyandottes. One of the brahmas didn't make it.

One of our GLW pullets has a bad eye.

It bulges and it is lower then the left eye. My youngest DD has decided to be her nurse and give her lots of TLC.

We named her Greta Garbo!!

I did email Ideal about both chicks. The other chicks are happy and running around in their brooder.

It's a long way from Texas to Virginia, and a lot can happen in the mail system. That's way I always order from the closest hatchery, expecially during summer and winter.

I love Ideal, but if you need replacement chicks, I'd order from a closer hatchery. You can find a list of them by state here: www.CountryChickens.com.

I ordered from Ideal because they were the only ones that had the Stadard Buff Brahmas available.

Some hatcheries will not ship to VA due to VA's poultry requirements. Meyers didn't have standard brahmas---they are in Ohio. I had posted on the forum looking for anyone raising brahmas--only a few and some were only bantams.

The chicks were to be shipped yesterday and arrived today. I had sugar water waiting for them in my van. The one chick had been dead awhile--it was cold and stiff. But, other then that, the chicks were jumping around in the box on the way home. Except Greta--the one with the bad eye. I think that is from problems with incubation or genetics. She was not picked on by the others.

Besides that, the new chicks are very spunky and eating a lot!

I ordered from Ideal. They shipped and the chicks arrived on Feb 25. All were alive and fine. Was set up and ready . I'm in NY ordered pullets.
I think I would order by sex cause that way they may be checked for health at sexing time. At least I think that. Plus I would order early in the year. Maybe you get the left overs later on?
