Ok, so recently one of my goats had to have her foot amputated. We were thinking we might be able to make her some type of prosthetic so she can use it w/out worrying her bone is going to come out of the skin.

She's still in the healing stage, so it's kept wrapped up right now, but it's looking really good and she's already started using it. So I'm thinking it's time I get something figured out. She's still got her leg, it's just her foot and about an inch or so above. I bought an elbow support that I thought I might be able to use in some way, we're thinking of using velcro to strap whatever we come up w/ on. I'm just kind of stumped at this point and thought I'd see if anyone here had any ideas!

I'd just leave it and let her form a good, tough callous on it. Anything you use will be constantly coming off and may even cause more trauma to the limb by rubbing against her skin. Protect it until it heals and then let it get tough.

I doubt she will be putting enough weight on it for the bone to push through the skin....not if it was amputated that high. She will probably only touch it down lightly for balance.

From my understanding the skin is to thin there and it will not be able to form a good callous. That is why the generally take the whole leg when there's an injury. I guess that is what I should have done, but it would have been a much bigger deal (and alot more expensive). The vet's thoughts were we can always take the rest later, but I'd rather not do that if I don't have to.

Right now when it's wrapped she's using it just like the other 3 legs. Not sure exactly how much pressure that is, but I can see when there is no longer any pain she'll won't be taking it easy on it.

I found these pics online.

One appears to be the bottom part of a crutch maybe? Another looks like just a piece of shaped plastic and another looks like a wooden pirate leg. All the goats look happy and healthy.
