We have 5 chicks right now not sure how many we will keep, depends on how many of them are roosters. We are planning on keeping them all if we can as pets only.

Down by the barn we have about 100 ft from the house we have a nice size low shed on skids. When we had our Akita we built him a very nice pen that he could not dig or climb our of( he was a rescue and extremely animal and human aggresive, except with people he knew). This pen is the really nice solid dog kennel panels (not the chain link type the solid type). The pen is 10'X10' X 6'. The floor is made of 12"X12" brick pads with timbers around them and spikes in the timbers to hold them in place. On the top is heavy gauge wire. We built a dog house inside the building for the dog that is actually fixed to the building so our dog could NOT dig out or move it in any way.

ohh and with in a few feet we have electricity from out tack room.. so they could have a heat lamp in the winter if we get too cold for them..... we can get to 40 below at some points in our lovely Iowa winters.. :(

We thought we would make this our new chicken coop for our tiny family. What would you suggest other than lining the pen with the wire mesh. The gate is reinforced as well with chains and clasps. I would like ideas on the gate as well to ensure nothing could get in.

We do plan on building a coop inside of the pen for added protection against our winter weather.

The pen also has a tarp over the top and one side and the entire pen is under a huge tree so it is shaded 99% of the time.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since we are new to this and would be mortified if we lost one of our babies.

Ohh the predators we have around us are: coyotes, fox, raccoons, mink, skunks, snakes (garder and bull snake), occasionally a cat, and bobcats.
