I'm not sure which subforum this fits in best so I guess I'll try here.
We free ranged our chickens for a while. It was great for a time until they started hanging out pooping on the stairs, the porch, the car, etc. As you can imagine they made a lot of messes. I learned my lesson and they are now confined in the new coop I've built. I'm doing my penance cleanup around the property now.
One of their favorite places to hang out was under my carport which is graveled and dry. There is lots of chicken poop in the gravel. (Think kitty litter...the piles just sat there and dried out in place.) Does anyone have experience/suggestions to separate poop from gravel? I'm trying to think of a good way to screen it out and not inhale lots of dust while working. The gravel is your typical driveway material. 1" minus or some such. It's loose, not compacted. The roof keeps it dry so unless I clean it up the poop it will stay dry and not break down on its own. Maybe some kind of scoop would work? The kind they use for cleaning stall shavings? I've also got a filter screen I use for compost that is made of 1/2" hardware cloth and 2x4's. Perhaps if I scoop up the gravel one wheelbarrow load at a time to screen it and wash it out with a hose?
