Howdy! I'm aspiring to be a backyard chicken farmer. I live in a north central Phoenix neighborhood with my wife and two daughters and have a medium sized, walled in backyard on less than an acre.

After listening to The Chicken Wisperer, I was inspired to move ahead!

I have yet to research my area's restrictions, but there is horse property nearby and I doubt my neighbors would object to us having 1-2 well cared for hens.

If allowed in my neighborhood, my idea is to build a small hen house first and then wait until someone is looking to give away a free hen or two to a good home. Is that unrealistic?

I know I could raise or buy a few hens pretty inexpensively, but I'd like to help someone out who might have to give their hen away for whatever reason. Is their a good adopt a chicken website that puts people in the same local area in touch?

Hi, don't know if it's the same over there but here in the UK there are charities that rescue ex battery hens for re-homing, maybe you could go down that route!?

You should really check out the local laws and restrictions first.
There are many posts on here where someone went ahead with small/large elaborate plans only to have to get rid of their flocks and remove their coops/runs.

One of the first results that came up when I googled the subject was a UK website. Haven't found a comparable one for the US that is active yet. Thanks!

I suspect that the rules will be very vauge and possible for the city enforcers to interpret them in such a way that they will mean what they want them to mean. But as you suggest, I will still I will do my research first. Thanks!
