If quail eat too much do they stop laying eggs

I think it depends on what they are overeating.
In chickens and other galliformes fat hens don't lay well.
If it is an appropriate feed for the species and age, it may be true but I doubt it.
What are you feeding and are these Old World or New World quail?

Where in the world is he getting this misinformation?
Hey Panama, what do you raise there.

I've known a lot of old timers (and youngsters) that have so much misinformation to offer that is just plain wrong - but they believe it.
He believes these things out of his own arrogance. You can't flip burgers and state you know a vast information about cow

I feed my birds 'at will', (more than enough to go around), with treats being rare but nutritionally balanced when they get them.
Everybody (chickens & quail) eats the same food; game bird. It's 21% protein, does not have calcium added, I serve ground egg shell on the side. Treats for my chickens are low protein. Treats for the quail is high protein.

Old World and New World quail are unrelated species. They just look alike which is why they are called quail.
That said, IMO, if a hen gets appropriate nutrition, she won't overeat and unless your birds are obviously overweight, I would ignore his advice.
Do you ever weigh your birds?
Did they stop laying?
