I've always been a city slicker LOL
Got 4 laying Black Americanos & a Rooster along w 1 Moran & 3 barnyard mix chicks in May.

I lost 2 of my laying hens within 1.5 mos to a coon getting in my coop :'( ... is NOW critter proof (I think since haven't had any other incidents) Then during hurricane harvey I lost another laying hen & my rooster :( I've had 2 of the barnyard mix just lay down & die ??

I now have 3 left: 1 Black Americanos Hen that just quit laying 2 weeks ago?? She has been rotating from 1 nexting box to another & staying all day & nite ... trying to hatch the golf balls I have in there ROFL. So I took out the balls & now turn the nesting boxes to the wall at nite cos she has NEVER done the roost since the coon got in way back in June?? The other 2 that died would not roost either ??

Neither the Moran nor the 1 barnyard chick nor the previously laying Blk Americanos are laying??

Any suggestions for a newbie ???

:welcome

It sounds like your one hen is broody, chickens don't lay when they are going through that.

G’Day from down under PatriotShar :frow Welcome!

I too am very sorry to read of your losses :(

With a broody hen, if you are not going to let her hatch some fertile eggs, it is best to ‘break’ her from the broodiness as she may persevere with her broodiness to the point of being detrimental to her health and overall condition.

Personally, I have found the Topic of the Week articles a great resource and a one stop shop for questions which may have already been discussed within the BYC membership group. One of these is ‘Broody Hens’ with some tips for breaking a broody. Or, if you search the forums, you will find lots of information on breaking a broody. I prefer the ‘raised crate’ method as this works best for my gals and they are usually broken within 3-4 days.

Good luck!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! :frow

Broodiness will run its course eventually. Some birds are constantly broody and others are more on and off. Its all hormone driven and each bird is different.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours! :)
