Greetings, I'm very new to this chicken raisin' business and I already love my 2 month old chicks. I'm a grandma of 8 and moved to the country with my honey to make a homestead instead of downsizing and moving to a condo:D. I love Jesus and my 4 grown children and now chickens! My husband made a sizable coop by converting the end of our shed, and constructed a run, covered with hardware cloth and a metal roof. We were gifted 5 unknown breeds/sexes, bought 2 more unknown from the same flock, and then 5 more hen chicks from a feed and seed store. So we have 12 chickens- seven are 9 weeks and five are 6 weeks. After establishing their pecking order, they are all getting along fairly well, I think! I hold them everyday and have named the first seven. We have a 5 month old kitty who scares them until they learned he can't get at them. This is a problem.
I'm anxious to learn from you all, yet I have read so many differing opinions about feed, shavings vs hay, roosters care, etc. My biggest question now is what to do about the cat, since we want to free range the chicks when they are old enough. Thanks!:frow

Greetings & Salutations. Welcome.

I'd keep a close eye on the kitten Closely. We had a stray cat that we took in, But he decided he wanted to chase the adult chickens. Then he tried to chase a bantam silkie on eggs, she charged him and he ran, Then he thought he would go after a somewhat broody C Rock, she freaked out and ran away from her eggs/nest. He is no longer with us, he was rehomed, if they still have him. He was a threat to our peaceful flock.

Our neighbor had adult chickens only and a stray cat had kittens. The kittens grew surrounded by chickens and have not in 2 years, chased a chicken. Just saying, keep an eye on the kitten at 5 months.
