I have just about had it with this dumb hawk!!! Heres when it all happened. Thursday afternoon, a snake snuck into my finch cage and ate five of my beautiful finches. I have three left
Then he went into my parakeet cage and attacked my white parakeet, Juliet. Juliet went to the vets and despite all their efforts, We had to put down my little angel. Well, after the brutal snake war, A hawk has decided to try and attack my chickens. He flew right over to my coop and stood on the outside, right in front of my silkie, Abby. After I chased it away, I went back inside. 10 or so minutes later, I heard Olivia, my bantam cochin, scream. I bolted out to the coop and chased the hawk away. I checked on Olivia and she was cowering in the corner of the coop. After looking at Olivia, I noticed her comb and wattles were all torn up. I'm not sure If the hawk grabbed her through the wire or she just scraped herself on the wire. It didn't matter who did who. This was war. That hawk was dealing with the big momma hen now. Our simple coop, is going to be full on hawk proof. After a trip to the hardware store, We had perfect Preadator proof wire with a nice shade cloth. As of now, Our coop, is now, HAWK PROOF!!! Except....now He's going up to my baby chick coop and trying to take my baby chicks. He must have never heard about what a momma hen does when someone desturbs her babies. When I went outside this afternoon, he was almost sitting on top of the baby chick coop( He cant get to my babies. my chick coop is very secure). Once I was about 5 feet away from him, he flew away....after I ran at him waving my arms and screaming. Mother reaction to protect her chicks. Well...the hawk had the nerve to come back again. And I scared him off. An hour later he came back and tried to terrorize Olivia again by looking at her from the outside of the coop. I ran again chasing him. Now my dog is starting to copy me. Livestock guard dog in training. Alright. I feel better now. I just had to get that out.
That Hawk better not mess with my chickens...or else
I am so sorry that you are having to deal with that annoying hawk. I hope that once it gets the idea
that your chickens are not going to be on their menu it will buzz off. Just keep at it chasing him
or her away. It will get the idea and get their free meal elsewhere.
Make so chicken can get where it is not able to see hawk. This greatly reduces stress on confined birds (that damage themselves trying to get away from a threat like hawk outside pen). The chickens are not often aware they are safe in pen and cause considerable damage to themselves as you noted.
We have added a reinforcements like shade cloth and special hardware cloth and their never out alone. The hawk will have to go through me to get my chickens.
