I strongly recommend a run attached to the coop. It keeps chickens where they can get fresh air, dig their own holes, and to adjust to the temperature as they see fit. An ideal run, has a bit of shade, a bit of sun, a bit of protection from the wind. Then let the chickens choose where they want to be. If you have a beautiful yard, and it sounds like you do, I think you really need a run to protect it. A full grown chicken can destroy a garden in less time than it takes to tell about it.
With a run, you can choose how much time they can be out on bug control, and how much time they can be pooping on your patio furniture, or digging and turning over your compost pile.
