I'm down to one duck. What should I do?

I started with three WH babies…one male and two female. Frank, Millie and Gertie. We lost Gertie to a raccoon a few months ago. Tonight we found Frank dead on the side of the pond. Killed in the middle of the day. No blood, no puncture wounds. Poor Mille has witnessed both deaths. I don't know if I should keep her, or find her a new home. I don't think it's fair to keep her alone. And I don't know how to keep them safe at this point if I did get her a companion. How would I introduce a new duck to her anyway?

I have a heavy heart tonight. Please send your ideas. Keep her, find her a new home, contact a rescue group? I hate to give up my duck, but I want to keep her safe and happy. I feel so bad for her….I'm just at a loss.

If you are not able to keep them safe, then she needs a new home. There are members of BYC who would be provide good homes. There is a Rehoming forum, too.

Unless you want to make the effort to build them housing and a pen that would keep them safe, that is another option.

I'm with Amiga. If your not changing anything than she WILL die, there is no reason to expect anything else. If you really like her than look at ideas on here. Many people have their ducks in a coop and run.

I agree with the above advice. It would take little money and effort to build something predator proof. Is that a big pond in the picture? There are lots of neat floating duck house ideas for them to get to and stay safe during the day then you could round them up and put them in a coop made of 1/2 hardware mesh at night. I am wondering what would have killed the duck in the middle of the day without leaving any evidence. Dose anyone else know what that would have been? Good luck and keep us posted.
