I'm new here and have no chickens yet, we're in the research and development stage, but here on Long Island there are plenty of people with backyard chickens. Long Island isn't urban, and some parts can be considered rural, my backyard is in-between that, but is plenty big enough to delight a few chickens :)

Wecome to BYC! Research is the best, but even with a year of research my first year has been a learnning curve!

My biggest lesson was that 3 chickens = 1 gas powered rototiller!

I got sick of sweeping patio and sidewalks and filling in holes so they now have an enclosed area and I use portable fence to manage them in the yard. They went after my vegie garden, destroyed the grass areas, and moved multiple cubic feet of dirt in a hour!

They were fine up till about 7 months old, I guess... Then it was pure destruction!

I live on a quarter acre, but my house is small and most of that land is back and side yards.

So, don't wait too long before starting your chickens... If you start with chicks they will not lay lay for almost four months, then they taper off a bit for winter. Good luck!
