Anywho, this is my first batch of bantams and I plan on building (well have dh build) a seperate coop & run for them. Any words of wisdom? Do bantams need any extra-special treatment? Or do you just wanna share some pics of yours? I'd love to see them!

If you have snow on the ground and let them free range, you need to keep an eye on their feet. The feathers get clogged with snow, and if they can't shake it off, frostbite occurs. I learned this the hard way.

I have a lovely little hen that doesn't have any feet now. But I love her, and as you will soon know, they are some of the most addictive of all poultry breeds! I can't get enough of the silly fluffy butts! And, since they'll have their own run, you can get lots! MWAHAHAHA!
Here are some really bad pics of mine:
Miss Lacy, who is missing her feet but doesn't really seem to mind. She looks so evil in this pic, but she's really very sweet.

Sonny Jim, who is amazing and snuggly-sweet.

I wonder about shaving the feathers off just prior to the cold? Would that work?

I guess, you'd just have to be really careful because a lot of the feathers on the feet are blood feathers. At least on my birds. It's easier just to keep them in a pen that there isn't snow in. Also, my spoiled birds have their own space heater when it gets really cold, but that's mainly for the frizzles, the cochins are fine. Frizzles only have half the number of feathers of a normal chicken, so they get really cold really fast.

I have Gold Lace Cochin bantams and I adore them. They're the very first chicks I ever hatched and I love love love them to pieces. Mine actually run to me when they see me coming.

My husband teases all the time that they look like they're wearing pj's. LOL

Some of you might be too young to know what these are but they look like they are wearing pantaloons.
