history-of-the-log-cabin0.gif

it will not be big at all just big enough to walk around in and its going to be made with no nails just notches in the wood. i have a whole group of people how plan on helping me do this cause im pretty small and i could never lift logs like that lol. i def will take pictures of the progress that i do clearing the land everything. dont ask why im doing it i have no idea. it just popped up into my head and for some reason i really want to stick with it. but thats after i go to the keys. oh so my question is what is the best wood to use like pine or im not sure about trees any info will be helpful. thanks in advance

There is this PBS special about this old man who went out and lived in the wilderness for ever...or at least until he got too old to do it anymore.

So the documentary is all about him building the cabin from scratch w/furniture and carve a wood bowl...

For the most part he grew or hunted for his own food but a plane would come and drop off some rations to him.

I don't recall his name but it sure was interesting. And I've seen it on PBS over the years at least 3 times.

You'll need some good wet clay dirt to fill in the holes between logs... inside and out... unless you want lots of ventilation. Is this a new idea for a coop?.

Cool project! I built my coop last year making the lumber from logs on my property. So I have some advice for you coming from experience. Logs are heavy! Make sure you have the right tools and methods for moving them around or someone could get hurt. The picture makes it look so easy. All I had to do with my logs was lift them onto special heavy duty saw-horses so I could saw them into logs with my chain saw (with attachment). Just lifting them 2 1/2 feet off the ground was enough work! You could think about making a derrik for lifting and placing the logs. That was something they used in the old days. By the way, the old timers were not stupid. In my case I made a jack modeled from the old wooden wagon jacks used during the last century (1800s). Good luck and be safe.

nope this is just gonna be a little area for my grandmother down by the lake and we have plenty of clay/mud LOTS OF IT. for the building process we plan on doing this completly old fashioned exactly how it is in the picture ive been reading alot on it so all of us about 15 or 20 are gonna give it a go. thanks for the tips all
