Hi,Im in Oxford ct and am seriously thinking on getting a few chix, but I have some questions for other CT residents (and non ct residents also..any input is good input!)

1) If I get say, 4 chix, would one rooster be enough?
2) How big of a coop should I mke them?
3) how big of a pen should the have to run around in?
4) I dont want them to intermingle with my dogs cause one is a coon hound and will not leave them alon, I just know it and the other is an Aussie / border collie mix with a huge prey drive(will always go after my cats with fire in her eyes like they killed her family or something)
5) Winterizing.. what or how to winterize them and their coop.
6) Eggs.. how many eggs and how often from four chickens?
thats it for now. Thanks for any info you can spare.

I will try my best to answer this, I am in Watertown CT

1) If I get say, 4 chix, would one rooster be enough? Yes, But do you really want one to make all that noise neighbors tend to not like roosters.

2) How big of a coop should I make them? they need about 3 sq feet per bird so you need a total of 12 sq feet if you have a run. so 3X4 is big enough but I would do at least a 10 foot long run for them.

3) how big of a pen should the have to run around in? I have 8 and my pen is 15 feet long and 6 feet wide
4) I dont want them to intermingle with my dogs cause one is a coon hound and will not leave them alon, I just know it and the other is an Aussie / border collie mix with a huge prey drive(will always go after my cats with fire in her eyes like they killed her family or something) yes I would avoid that
5) Winterizing.. what or how to winterize them and their coop. do research on the deep litter methode and google more info but the biggest thing is drafts and being wet avoid those and you avoid frost bite. the chickens can handle the cold. Also a heated water source is good so the water does not freeze
6) Eggs.. how many eggs and how often from four chickens? Ok this depends on the chickens but I read somewhere every 25 hours so my best guess is 4 chickens will give you about 2 dozen eggs a week.
