Hey guys! I'm (kinda) new to BYC.
I started a flock of purebred Icelandic chickens a while back, but ended up having to move to the city temporarily. I'm back on our five acres now (in Idaho), and I'm starting over with chickens (I do still have one Icelandic left from my first flock)
This time I'm taking on several different breeds and am planning on selling eggs, chicks, pullets/cockerels, hens/roosters and possibly meat eventually. I'll be selling (or giving away) only when I have excess, but my flock will be colorful and unique (eggs will be in many different colors!) I'm pretty excited.
Breeds I have in my flock right now are: Icelandic, Buff Orpington, Barnevelder/Lavender Orpington, Barnevelder/Wyandotte, and Barnevelder/Blue Australorp (some of the Barnevelder mixes also have Leghorn), Black Star, Speckled Sussex, Jersey Giant, and (I think) Bantams.
The buff orpington (Sunflower) is the baby of the flock (pics coming soon), but he/she might not be for long! I have a couple hens going broody (one is on 16 eggs due to hatch the first week of August, and the other hen just started on a batch of 18 eggs - let's see if she'll stay broody on them).
In the future I'd really love to get some Ameraucanas and Welsummers, a couple of Cream Legbars and some Marans to add to my flock. I might get some other breeds as well (maybe Brahmas?), but still not sure.
I'll be posting pics of my flock, especially all the little ones (the Barnevelder crosses, who are currently "teenagers," and Sunflower who is about a month old, but I have pics starting from when he/she was just a couple weeks).
The only other thing I can think to add is that, as I live off-grid, I won't always be able to respond to posts as timely as I wish I could.
Well, I can't wait to meet other members of BYC, and have been telling myself to post for a few weeks now! Finally found the time for it
