Never had chicks before and my brother gets some...so I said "Hey, let's get some chicks. He's building a coop for his and the plan was for me to add my chickens to his. Now I'm thinking I should just build a coop for mine and keep them. I have 3 kids, 12 & 10 yrs old, and may see what we can build cheap and probably recycled materials. We'll see...

Just start lurking in classifieds ads and curb sales. If you are driving around and see a business with a bunch of pallets stacked up somewhere ask them if you can have some...They are a great source of free or cheap wood. A little extra building trouble, but still totally doable...and if you match them up just right sometimes you don't even have to cut! There is an auto store by one of my friends houses that I need to call and see if I can have their pallets. I figure I'll start collecting them and breaking them down, and start adding them to the coop collection. We just built a duck coop today...hard work, but we got it. Chickens are awesome. I love them. The chores with them also give me just a few child free minutes. I can go and peacefully watch, feed, pet, water, clean out and play with them basically interrupted. The kids know if they come to where I am with the chickens I will ask them to help, so they just avoid me during chicken chore time..which makes me love love love chicken chore time.
I mean the kids help, if I ask them to...but I also notice they tend to avoid me during situations I am likely to ask them to help with...which is perfect for me! Yay. Chickens and a break!
