Hello everyone I'm new to the chicken life but am very excited to be a part of this group. I'm in Kentucky and my husband and I are looking for ideas and chicken breeds to get started with for our first go around. Any pointers are greatly appreciated

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Lots of great chicken breeds out there. I am quite fond of the Orpington breeds....(Buff Orpingtons and Black Australorps) Very friendly, docile, great layers and make great lap sitters!

You might stop by our Breeds pages and see what our members are saying about the breeds....https://www.backyardchickens.com/products/category/chicken-breeds

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry there....https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center

Enjoy this new adventure you are on and welcome to our flock!

What kind of chickens you get and how many would depend on how big your coop is, how big the run is, whether or not you want to free range them, and do you want them for eggs, meat, pets, or a little bit of everything.

You would probably like to post on your state thread as well. You can find it at "where am I, where are you," in the social forum. Chicken folks in your area can help you fine tune the type of coop you need for your climate, where the best prices are for feed, etc. who has what breeds.,etc.

Welcome to Backyard chickens, very glad you joined the flock.

Welcome to BYC! Please make yourself at home and we are here to help.

What kind of chickens are you looking for? Are you wanting lots of eggs? Meat? Pets? Birds or exhibition? All of the above? These all contribute to the breeds you buy. Feel free to check out these links. Hopefully they'll help you narrow down the breeds that are perfect for you

A good choice purely from a production standpoint, would be sexlinks. You can be guaranteed no accidental boys, as long as you order straight from a hatchery. Feed stores can't be trusted to have properly sorted and labeled their chicks. They are laying machines.

Welcome to BYC!

You've already been given some great advice and lots of helpful links so all I can think to add would be this reference:

I used this site a lot when deciding which breeds to go with, the comparison info was very useful.

Good luck to you.

Nice to have you join us!
