Hi one and all! I'm so glad to find this wonderful forum! You've already answered some of my questions, even without registering. I love my chickens, but don't know much about them, so I'm looking forward to gaining some important knowledge from you all.

I've got 13, 12 girls and "Red" my RIR matador! 5 RIR's, 1 Buff O (Luanne), 1 NHR (Peggy), 1 White Leghorn (Marilyn), 1 mixed Sussex (Flo), and 3 young newbee Americauna's (Big, Bad, and Bold). Also 3 ducks, 3 dogs (2 G Shepherds and a Pom mix), a cat and 4 horses. Whew! All on 1 crammed acre in Clayton, CA. That's No. Cal, SF East Bay.

My almost 21 (May 18) twin daughters also live here, and my dear, supportive (mostly) husband, who works way too hard.

I found this site when searching for help with a sick chicken. One of my RIR's, she's been lethargic, hiding in corners and laying in the sun, today stayed in the coop when everybody else races out in the morning. She's got runny poop, and a very dirty behind. I've been worried about her anyway because she's got really scaley (sp?) legs, very unlike my others.

My chickens and ducks are free-range except for being locked up at night. They mostly lay eggs single-file in a nest in the barn, while 3 others will lay in nesting boxes in the coop. I'm averaging 7-9 eggs/day. They HATE layer crumbles, and feed mostly on commercial scratch ( I know, bad), and forage for everything else. They get treats from the house via leftovers, and are constantly begging for them! Of course, they have fresh water and oyster shell and crumbles available at all times.

Can anyone offer suggestions/help with my girl? A trip to the vet is not an option :-( Thank you for any advice, my new friends!

Welcome! I will post the poo threads an poo sites when I get them all gathered for you.
You can try pellets instead of crumbles. I moved the girls from layer to flock raiser when mine decided they did not like pellets.

scratch is probably not a great all the time food. they will need more protein.
I will post the sites I have and One day I will get that mess organized so I can help people more easily, but for now, just keep looking back at this post as I try to add the links.

Welcome to BYC. Your RIR most likely has scaly leg mites. She probably has lice/mites on her as well. She will become anemic and die if you dont treat her, this is why she is acting lethargic. You need to pick her up and visually inspect her for lice/mites. Here's a link that will help you identify and treat accordingly, please read it.

As for the scaly leg mites...lather both legs with vegetable oil or vaseline til her legs clear up and scales lay flat. You'll be smothering the mites in this manner.
