Hi everyone!

I have just begun keeping chickens. We currently have 12 roosters and 2 hens. They were free and are about 6 months old. We plan to butcher most of the roosters...we have too many! My husband I are novices so I'm sure we'll make a few mistakes.
This is our 1st attempt at a coop...

It's working for now but they only stay in the enclosed fence area if they choose to.

The first night we came home and found them all out of their "designated area"

Haha! First lesson learned:chickens go where they want to!

Be very careful with this set up and predators. Chickens are prey and the critters of the night are always on the look out for a chicken dinner! You might want to butcher up all but one rooster and get another 8 hens. This way, the hens are not over bred and will lay well.

Here is a link to our learning center. Lots of good reads from building the coop, feeding your flock and keeping them healthy and safe...

Good luck with your new adventure and welcome to BYC!

Thanks. We do have coyotes and that is a concern. The coop does close and we put all the chickens in at night. I'll definitely check out the link!

You may want to trade out the chicken wire for 1/2" hardware cloth, predators will not be kept out by flimsy chicken wire. If your birds won't stay put, think about an enclosed run with top - it will also protect them from hawks.
