Today I saved 2 leghorns-1 BO- 1 bardrock and 1 half dead EE my queston is how well do 2-3yr.olds lay? How much longer will they live should i have let her eat them?

Well..at 2 or 3 years old...they will slow down considerably on the laying. Im glad you was there to save them. My feelings are...if they lay well for you, for a few years....they deserve to live out the rest of thier natural lives. Dont get me wrong....we have raised cornishx....for the freezer....however, our laying girls will live to be as old as mother nature lets them.

I have 3 old Black sex link hens and they still lay almost every day. They have to be 4 years old. Molting right now, but still laying well. Good job on the save. We just inherited a friends flock. We thought it was only going to be 10 and it was 28 mutt hens and 2 guineas, plus 4 kittens for the barn. I think my DH is going to go squirrely on me. LOL We are up to 2 fish, 2 turtles, 3 dogs, 5 ducks, 6 cats and kittens, and 78 chickens!!!!!

I am up to 19 now so then you think they will be ok for a few years? I dont wanna go to the chick hut and fing one............well you know

You are bound to lose some just naturally. But I am by no means a chicken expert and my chickens have somehow survived me. The new flock is free ranging and I had to catch 4 of them to put them in for the night for protection. They are in a back area of our tractor barn with a rooster that we casted out for being too aggressive with my young Red Stars. 28 new hens have kept him quite busy and his crow sounded pretty weak this morning. If he dies, I know it will be with a smile on his face!!!!!
By the way, that's exactly what my DH said, 78!!!!!!!!!!OMG!!!!

I have some 7-9 year olds that lay well. Good old heritage breeds lay longer than the cross breeds. That has been my experience anyways.

78 isn't bad. I will be wintering over 120. That is after thinning the flocks down considerably.

OH WOW my DH would never let me have that many chickies But i do want a few (10) more I like the look of a lot of diff breeds and so far so good everyone is getting alongwe will see how long that lasts
