Our Tractor Supply got chicks in today. ONLY Rhode Island Reds. I only want 6, but want other breeds too. I plan to go tomorrow or Wednesday when they get others in. I am having such a hard time being patient! I am so tempted to go get all 6 now, but I want some Ameraucana, and barred rocks, too. What are my chances of getting 2 of each? (Mixed pullets to arrive Tues or Wed)

Oh, I'm sure you'll be able to get the ones you want...they usually get LOTS of those breeds...oh, and just so you know, while they will be advertised and sold to you as "Ameraucanas", they aren't. Hatcheries ONLY sell Easter Eggers...they are pretty birds, but don't be disappointed if they don't lay green or blue eggs (they probably will, but EEs can also lay pink or brown eggs, or actually any color egg there is, because they are mutts). I have 4 of them, and 1 lays blue, 1 lays green, 1 lays pink, and 1 lays brown.
Take a deep breath, and hold out for what you really want!! Oh, and

If you want two of each, I strongly suggest doing your own research ahead of time as to what each breed looks like as a chick. The chances of someone working at TSC that will be able to help you pick out each breed will be slim to none. Armed with that knowledge, be prepared to point out exactly the chicks that you want.

Yes! I have been researching for months, and have books (page flagged) to bring in with me. They are going to think I am crazy:P I am still a little nervous I'll end up with a rooster.

Well, you could end up with a roo, there's about a 10% chance of it, but of all the chicks I've ever bought from a feed store, I've never gotten one. Just lucky I guess.

Very good ideas! Finding an employee, that knows the difference between a duck and a chicken, can be difficult enough at a farm supply store. Employees that know the different breeds are rarer than hens teeth.
