My 24 week old rir's and light sussex that have not started to lay yet are in and out of nesting boxes last few days. They are not staying in there for any length of time, does this mean eggs soon? No egg song or squatting!!

Mine started to check out the nesting boxes a few weeks before I got my first egg. It's a good sign. That said, it's been 6 weeks since they first started checking out the nesting boxes and I only have about half laying. It is definitely a waiting game. The most imminent sign I have seen is not the red combs and wattles, or the egg song (both or which are assuredly signs). The most imminent sign was distress. Pacing, crying, panting.

That's my experience, anyway.

Eggs are coming soon! My girls always check out the nest boxes right before they start to lay. You might want to give them supplemental light to extend the daylight hours-- with the days getting shorter, they may take a little longer to lay. Getting those first eggs is always so exciting
