We are almost finished our new coop. We're going out of state for our son to have surgery on Tuesday so we had to get it done enough to get the chicks out of the dining room. We used a lot of recycled materials...the steel roofing is all salvaged, as are the nice old wooden windows. The windows came from various places, and I replaced glass where necessary and did some major painting. The 'door' is actually a large window that we found in our barn when we moved here, and my husband built a frame for it so it is a door. When it came to the floor of the coop, we were so worried. Then I found a thread on here about Black Jack #57...I HIGHLY recommend it. It was inexpensive, easy to put on, and dried very quickly.
The chickens will have run of the property when we're home, and will be locked in their run/coop when we're not. The whole thing has 1/2" hardware cloth buried at least a foot down and a foot out from the base. If a critter makes it into there, they deserve a chicken.
Here are some pics!
Our son, 8, loves to help build stuff. He ran from the school bus, dropping his backpack on the way.
Digging the moat...
Cold 50 degrees and rainy today, but it had to get done!
Chicks are in, light is on, and they seem very happy.
We need to get a roost up, they were trying to sit on the 2x4. When they doze off, they fall off. Too funny.
