My ducks have never been locked up at night but due to a dog attack I want to start closing them in at night so here's my question. I have chickens which have a coop and fenced run. What's everyones opinion on putting my ducks in with the chickens only at night? They have had very little contact before so will they fight or get used to each other eventually??

I have had mixed poultry coops and runs with no problems provided there is enough room. I'd observe them closely for awhile to make sure no one is being overly picked on.

update: that didn't work. Put the ducks in with the chickens tonight and within minutes one of the hens was jumping on my newest duck and actually pulling feathers. Poor thing ran for the door and wanted out. So after about ten minutes we took the ducks back out. The idea wasn't to stress my ducks!!

It is not possible to predict an exact outcome. That is why I urged observation to ensure that none of your flock would be hurt.

My chicken and ducks are cooped separately, but when I add new ducks to the coop, I put up a separator until everybody adjusts.
Do you have any way to put up a separation in the chicken coop? Or maybe just build a new coop for the ducks.

we are gonna get a new coop for our ducks. I lost my male khaki in the dog attack a few days ago and I'm simply devasted. I know they hate being locked up so I never did it but with my remaining pekin and the new duck I just got I want them cagwd at night. The only reason I wanted to try and put them in with the chickens is because right now they are both put under a truck topper which doesn't give a lot of room. They may not like it but I can't lose another one so for now that's where they are gonna sleep.

I appreciate your advice..that's why I sat out there and watched how they would all get along. They may have gotten used to it but my hen was actually pulling feathers on my newest duck so I got them right out. It was worth a shot and now we know.

Do you have another building where you can put the ducks at night? A fenced off area in the garage, etc. Dogs-I do not free range much. I've had problems in the past with dogs. One time I came home to find every hen in a pile, dead, from a dog. The animal had killed the birds and put them all in a pile (over a dozen hens). A very bad day.

we live in the woods. Raccoons, coyotes, the guy next door hoards cats, even seen bear tracks one day but my baby was taken out by a yellow lab. Don't get it but I will get my ducks a suitable pen in the next couple days. My pekin survived the attack but has been traumatized. She is finally get back k to normal but it took getting another duck cause she was sooo depressed. Wouldn't eat or drink or even move until we brought our new duck home.
