Preparing for breeding season. Years ago when I was collecting sperm from an aging stud dog for a Sperm Bank it was recommended to supplement his diet with spirulina, after 3 weeks of supplementation sperm count and motility went from low to good. Fast forward to chicken flock today, I always supplement my baby chicks with spirulina as it helps them feather out quickly, as well as spirulina supplement the flock during molt. Last year I began supplemental spirulina in my flock before breeding season at 20g per kg of feed. Went from a 70% hatch rate to nearly 100%. Here's what I noted so far over the past month of supplementing (decided to actually log information this year), egg weights have increased on average between 4-10 grams in each of the 3 different breeds, don't have calipers to measure egg size, unknown if egg size has increased. Have increased fertilized eggs from 60% to 100% in the last month. Egg yolks also have increased viscosity (comparable to pudding) unknown why that is or what it means. Fertility is looking great so far, now looking forward to seeing another year of increased hatchability.

Do you do anything to increase fertility and hatchability in your flock? If so, what do you do and how is it working out for you?

I just give mine a nutritional boost before breeding season for strong chicks, Hatchability, & fertility. This would be either Rooster Booster in water, or Kickin' Chicken in some feed, & I give out to everyone.
