If I want to test a new incubator but don't want any chicks, can I incubate a fertile egg for 4 days and then open the egg to make sure it started developing? Will that be enough to know if the incubator is working correctly?

That won’t tell you if it’s working correctly. Eggs can develop to various points with sub par environments.

the best way to ensure your incubator is working is to calibrate a thermometer and hygrometer and ensure appropriate readings.

I calibrated with a separate thermometer and hygrometer. Just trying to double check before putting in expensive eggs.
