Last year I hatched three little mallard ducks in my rcom mini incubator and it was so much fun and such a great experience I couldn't wait to do it again this year! I have three duck eggs in the mail scheduled to arrive tomorrow (There are not many people that keep poultry around here so getting eggs shipped was my best option). The sender just notified me that they included one extra chicken egg, and now I am not sure what to do with it. I just can't bear the thought of not giving the little chick the best chance to hatch so I do want to try and incubate it. Don't worry if it does hatch I have accommodations for it!
My incubator holds three eggs comfortably with auto-turn. I could fit another egg in there and manually turn it, however my question is can they be incubated together? I know that the the chicken egg will hatch around 21 days and that the ducks are closer to 28 days and the humidity is higher for the ducks during lock down. I have been doing a lot of research to see if they can be put in together and have found conflicting information. I was thinking I could make a small hatcher and remove the chicken egg at 19 days for lockdown. I also read somewhere that the bacteria from the chicken egg could harm the duck eggs so should I not risk having it in there? The ducks are my main priority. I know that washing eggs is a controversial subject but I was thinking if I wash/disinfect the chicken egg won't it make it more susceptible to possible bacteria from the duck eggs? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!
