I've got almost all my materials now. Just waiting on a PC fan to get to me and looking for a thermometer. You'd think that since I had 3 kids that I could find a thermometer around here somewhere! So far, the grand total spent is at $24 and change. I'm going to try to keep that number from getting any higher. I almost bought a roll of hardware cloth but then realized that I've got several panels of those wire cube shelves collecting dust in my bedroom closet that would be even better. And cheaper!
At the moment, I've got a 15 watt light bulb in the cooler so I can get an idea of what my temps would be like without ventilation holes, etc. It's holding steady at 103. I know that number will drop a bit once I make vent holes and add a fan, correct?
My biggest question: The homemade incubators I've seen here have the heat source on the side. I would like mine on the underside of the lid. Is that okay? My thinking on that is since it would be further away from the eggs and at the center of the lid that I would get more even temps throughout with little to no cold spots. My temp readings have been at the bottom of the cooler with the light/heat source coming from the top. I read a post a day or two ago about some having issues with the heat located on one side or the other in their box. My viewing glass would then be on the side of the cooler.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks!

Hygrometer has been calibrated. I thought it was junk when I pulled it out of my husband's humidor and checked the reading. Can't remember your name, but thanks for the hygrometer calibration link! I may start some cutting into the cooler tonight. Just trying to figure out some minor details before I cut. I want to do this right.
