incubator

I made a styrofoam incubator with a light bulb, thermostat, temp and humidity meter, and when I test ran it the temps ran up and down between 98, and 102, and the humidity was at 30%, it ran for about 2 days staying at those temps and humidity. I shut it down because my pheasants hadn't started laying. Now that they are I decided to test run it again to see that it was still working. When I looked at the hygrometer it read 68%, this was after it has sat for about a week in my basement where the test was done. What's up with that. should it read that high just sitting in the box? there was a small pan of water in the bator.

its probably correct or at least close--- your incubator is in the basement... it was on and warmed up a week ago and it has water in it--- so yeah its like correct... the bator was turned off and all the humidty increased as it cooled down. Never hurts to get another hygrometer and check them both side by side..

In that case you would need 3.If you only have 2 and they read different,how will you know which one is right/

That is normal the more water the higher the humidity. Heat will lower the humidity to get the humidity up you need a larger volume of water you need the humidity somewhere around 50% or you will never hatch any pheasants out.

I'm keeping a pan of water in the incubator, and can only get 30% humidity I'm reading that you need more surface area of water to increase humidity, but i'm limited to the space I have for more water containers. Any hints?

I keep a wick in my hatcher in the water pan to achieve the higher humidity during hatching. You can buy them from anyplace that has incubator supplies or you can just buy a humidifier wick. Cut it so that it fits in the water pan with several inches sticking up out of the water (like a wall). This helps the water evaporate into the air easier.
