So two of my roosters got in a fight on Sunday. They managed to rip each other's mouths up pretty badly. And to top it off the wounds inside their beaks are infected (dark, warm, moist, dirty area just begs to be infected). Poor boys, they look like they have the mumps their throats are so swollen and when you look inside you see an angry red sore and blood, poor poor boys. I've got them on Baytril and Amoxicillian. They'll be ok in a few days. But my questions are...

1. Is it normal for infections to turn blue? One of the roo's throat is blue. Is it just bruised? Or has the infection turned septic? This is a VERY valuable bird, I can't lose him ($500 + value). So if he's in danger he's going to the vet immediately.

2. The other roo is currently with his girlfriend. They share the same water. Is the hen in any danger drinking water that could potentially be contaminated with bacteria from the roo's infected beak?

Yep those are bruises you see. Often times the second day is the really bad time for swelling and bruising and then it will slowly taper off from there. Also be sure to check their feet really well too for open cuts.

The sores in their mouths sounds unusual though. You might spot check other birds you have for whitish or yellow sores in their mouths as well. If you find any it could be Canker and is easily treated.

The usual fighting style is for one bird to grab the other's comb and then rake them with the spurs. I don't remember any of mine that has had injuries inside the mouth from fighting and that has included those that have fought through the wires of pens.

a bird that valuable should have been housed alone
and yes you need a vet for the right meds and doctoring

why spare the bucks when chicken is valuable

Canker popped in my mind for a moment, but I've dealt with infected mouth sores before and this case fits to a T. Plus my birds are weird and try to get each other's tongues when they fight.

This will be the 4th time I've had this happen.

He was housed alone. One of my other roos got loose and fought through the cage while I was gone. By the time I got back they had finished their quarrel and bloodied themselves pretty badly. I would never put him with anybody, I wouldn't even let a fly bite him. lol. I've been talking to my vet for advice, and I'm doing what she has told me so I don't think it's necessary to take him to her unless he gets worse. I caught it early so I think he'll be okay.
