Hello,

I'm a newbie to chickens and building up my flock. Right now we have all hens. What are the pros and cons (besides the noise) to having a rooster around? What things do I need to worry about? Thank you

Welcome! I've had chicken a long time, and love to have POLITE roosters. They are beautiful to look at, and part of normal flock dynamics. If illegal where you live, forget it, as they will crow! Also, toddlers could really be injured by a bad rooster, so use caution there. Right now I have 35 chickens, including six cocks. Too many, but three of them need to move elsewhere. The boys must be raised right, and go elsewhere (freezer camp) if human aggression occurs. Mary

Pros....They are protective of the flock, enable you to have chicks, and are beautiful to look at.
Cons... Some breeds can have aggresive roosters, the crowing might bother your neighbors.
