Info please - What is the difference between a lavender and a blue?

I just want to know how they (lavenders) come about and how to tell if you have one. What exactly is the difference in appearance? Genetic components?

I heard that lavendar is a light gray shade. Much lighter than blue. It is like splash but it does not have any dark spots. I am interested in learning more about lavendar too so maybe someone else can weigh in on this.

My understanding is that lavender, or self blue is true breeding. lav x lav = lav. Blue is not true breeding, and it involves blue, black and splash, but I don't remember which gives what.

Thanks. I was interested in how one comes by that color after reading about breeding programs to get it. I didn't know what it was!
