injured chicken that "yawns"

wonderful advice, i actually have mint and lavender in my garden! anything that calms. he was so freaked out. after 3 days he is just now starting to get around. and eating fresh fruit and pedialyte diluted.
How is he doing today? Sounds like he may pull through this yet. Just keep an eye out for infection. Be careful when using hydrogen peroxide as it can also kill living tissue as well. You might switch to iodine instead.

I hope he continues to heal.

So sorry to hear of your roo's injuries. When my young hen was attacked by a dog, we kept her warm, isolated, hand fed and watered and treated her injuries. She will never be able to rejoin the flock, but she did survive to become our beloved house chicken. I hope your roo survives!

i think my quick decision payed off, all i had was some flagyl, that i got on board within 24 hrs and also the aspirin water and i think roo just did not like it. making those exaggerated mouth movements. However i think that is what saved him. i am an old nurse so i like hydrogen peroxide but i do know that it isn't being used for wound irrigation like it used to be because of possible damage to good skin tissue. i will go back to blukote tomorrow, and neosporin. today he finally was up on his feet without my prompting and acted like he was super hungry. wounds are closed now and clean looking. The first nite as he layed on his side and moaned, i was prepared to lose him. But as my husband said, 'he's a tough ol bird!" lol

now tell me more about this house chicken business, are u serious? is your chick indoors? what kind of cage?

LOL! Yes, Gretl lives in the house. She has some neuro issues as a result of her mauling, but we love her as she is. Her residence is the bottom half of an extra-large plastic dog crate - when we aren't hand-feeding her, holding her, giving her some outdoor time or letting her explore the room we happen to be in, that is..
