today is a devastating day for me, but also a hard learning experience. We had 6 chicks and 2 ducklings, all 5 weeks old, and today was the second day they were in the run, and the dogs got into the pen. We lost 4 chicks, 2 chicks survived with no injuries, but the 2 ducks are in really bad shape. I didn't think to get a picture before dressing the wounds and will put a pic up today when I change the dressings. One duck has minor injuries, her feathers got plucked off and the bald spots bled, but that's about it. We cleaned it with warm water, hydrogen peroxide, and put blu-kote on it. Her wing is sagging, but not broken. The other duck is the one I am worried about. He has minor scrapes on his back and wings we have blu kote on those, but on his chest on the left side you can see his breast. The skin is gone. You can see the muscle. We cleaned it with warm water and put gauze on it and held it on with athletic bandage. What should we do for that injury? Can we put blu-kote on it? Oh and they are not eating, how long should I let them not eat before I tube feed? It has been about 15 hours. They have nibbled once, but not really ate. They wouldn't eat starter feed so I gave them an egg and oatmeal with mashed banana. They are drinking, and their water has vitamins and electrolytes in it. I guess I am asking, what would you guys do if your ducks had these injuries? I am going to go to my vet today and ask for advice as well.
Oh and they are currently in the house in a kiddie pool.
