I have a 10 week old polish top hats who I just put outside, one was extremely skittish and overnight tried to escape through the chicken wire fencing. I found her early this morning with her top feathers torn off and her neck basically skinned. We freed her and she ran for 10 seconds then just fell to the ground with her head down. We thought about euthanizing her so she doesn't suffer but she seems to be a fighter. What do I do for her to help her? I have covered the wound and brought her inside but I want to
Keep cleaning it and put something on it but its so deep and open I don't know what to use. She just lays with her head down. I'm going to try and hand feed her food and water today since I let her rest a little but am I pushing it? Is she suffering and I'm prolonging her death? I can get a picture of the wound I just didn't want to post such a bloody picture. Please advice me here ill do whatever it takes to help her!

Hi Shannone730,

I found a young chick like that outside a month ago. I don't know what happen. Missing head feathers and the skin ripped open on the neck. I brought it inside and took another healthy chick in with it too, just so it wouldn't be lonely. I didn't clean the wound with anything. I just let the chick rest and recover. The wound healed quickly and the chick survived. I kept the chicks indoors for over a week. The feathers grew back and covered the wound.

I can't advise what to put on the wound, but since I have treated chicks feet before for bumble foot, I know they can have an antibacterial ointment. That might help cover and protect the open wound.

Hope it turns out okay and your little one recovers nicely.

Take care.

Did your chick also basically lay down with her face to the ground and move very little? I'm afraid she won't move to eat or drink...

She is actually looking pretty good was eating and drinking! Hopefully she stays that way! Thank you for your response
