Hello, about two weeks ago my flock was attacked by an unknown predator. My roo did his job perfectly but he got terribly beat up in the process. Now he can’t crow. When he vocalizes, he’ll give a choking sound and shake his head like crazy. Also-he has become very , very timid. He used to be very social but now he’s completely opposite of his old self.....
Any suggestions to help him be my old roo again?

Can you post some photos?
Where was he beaten up - head/neck, tail, etc.?

Can he eat/drink on his own?
Is his crop empty first thing in the morning?
Do you have any other roosters?

If he was terribly beat up, then 2wks may not be long enough to recover. I would make sure he's eating/drinking well.

Describe the timid - he's timid with you, with the flock, etc.?

Give your roo a little more time, and some enclosed area within his flock area to feel safe but still with his flock.

I am assuming you took this as a learning experience and changed the living area to make sure no overhead or ground predators could get to the flock

If the "unknown predator" is still lurking around, even if he cannot reach the flock, that could help make your roo more timid during his recovery. If you are sure that his flock area is now safe from the unknown predator, you might consider adding a visual screen of two foot or so cardboard around his living area. That will give him more peace of mind and sleep, which will help him recover faster.

You don't mention roosts or perches. Most chickens sleep better if they are off the ground, 1-3 feet, depending on their flight ability.
